This is a World War I era compass with a leather case. I don’t know that this was a military compass.
I suspect it was simply a civilian pocket compass.
It is from an estate and has been in storage probably since the 1930s.
There were compasses of this type from Taylor which had a patent date of 1920, so I think this particular compass was produced between 1915 and 1920.
The leather case was probably not supplied with the compass, although it was certainly used with the compass.
The leather case has a snap button which reads
    L.I. City
    MotoMeter
    TireTester
    N.Y.
    CONDITION:
    VERY GOOD USED CONDITION
I am not a compass collector, so this rating is not an expert evaluation.
The case shows wear, with abrasion and no prominent scratches.
The crystal is quite clear, but when examined under a magnifying lens, the glass shows wear.
The compass needle turns freely when unlocked.
The needle points correctly to magnetic north.
One photo shows the compass together with an iPhone compass application for comparison.
The transit lock screws and locks properly.
    The lanyard loop turns freely.
The compass is in working order.
Please see the photos for an assessment of the compass’ external condition.
